Winchester’s Defender series 410 Bore ammunition would surely turn any shotgun into a ferocious tool for home defense. That said, the shell’s apparently low 750 fps muzzle velocity proves that Winchester specifically designed it for Taurus Judge and S&W Governor revolvers. The muzzle velocity is only low because Winchester used a revolver’s much shorter barrel to record it!

All of this shotshell’s lead projectiles are copper-plated. That hardens them up, which in turn improves their ability to avoid deformation as they deeply penetrate soft tissue. First to exit the barrel are three “Defense Discs.” They are shaped like tins of cat food, for want of a better comparison, and their 90° angles inflict traumatic injuries without the need for terminal expansion. Next to exit the barrel are 12 pellets of BB shot. They are each 0.18” in diameter – much smaller than 00 buck, which is 0.33” in diameter, but still quite effective for personal defense at close range and in large quantity.

If you chose to carry a Judge or Governor because you want what is effectively a miniature shotgun, then this ammo belongs squarely on your radar!
