If you’ve chosen the “SBD” approach to home defense, then you’d might as well go ahead and choose the best ammo while you’re at it. This Subsonic label cartridge by Hornady is … well, it’s subsonic, so its report is noticeably quieter even if you aren’t shooting through a can.

Granted, the bullet’s low 1,050 fps muzzle velocity (16” test barrel) doesn’t drive that much energy into the target (~450 ft lbs striking energy within conventional home defense distances). But that’s not any ordinary bullet. It’s the Sub-X, which specializes in delivering wide and injurious expansion at lower velocities.

This ammo’s propellant has a low flash signature. That can save your bacon if you ever have to fire at night, as it’ll keep your eyesight better adjusted to your surroundings!
