These numbers are for the magazine capacity. This means that technically, each of these pistols can hold one additional round, which would be the round in the chamber. For example, the Glock 17 has a standard capacity magazine of 17 rounds. If you were to chamber a round, then remove the magazine and replace it with a fully loaded magazine, the Glock 17’s capacity would then be 17+1 in the chamber for a total of 18 rounds.
Some states have magazine capacity limits. For example, gun owners in California, Connecticut, D.C., Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York are limited to no greater than 10 round magazines. Those in Colorado and Vermont are limited to 15 round magazine capacities for their handguns.

Glock Magazine Extensions
Besides the magazines that Glock offers, there are other options to add more rounds to your Glock magazine. A magazine extension is a piece of aluminum and a magazine spring that replace the factory basepad and spring of your magazine. This adds room for extra rounds in your magazine. Companies like Springer Precision and Shield Arms offer magazine extensions that can add up to five additional rounds to some 9mm Glock magazines.
Aftermarket Glock Magazines
Some companies offer aftermarket Glock magazines with larger ammo capacities than Glock factory magazines. For example, Elite Tactical Systems produces clear polymer magazines in various calibers and capacities that you might not see from Glock.
Magpul offers a 50-round drum magazine that is compatible with double stack 9mm Glocks.
How Many Rounds Do You Need?
Now you may be wondering, “how many rounds should I carry?” It’s impossible to say how many rounds you need. The type of gun you are able to comfortably carry will play a role in how many rounds you can carry in one magazine. It’s not a bad idea to have a second magazine on you, no matter how many rounds your gun holds. That way, you will have spare rounds if you need them and you have a backup magazine in the case you have a magazine failure. Just be sure you practice your reloads!
